Is there a Kirkland minoxidil product that is better for men than for women? There are many products on the market – Kirkland Minoxidil 5% Regrowth for Men, Kirkland Minoxidil 2% Regrowth for Women, Rogaine for Men, Rogaine for Women, Propecia and Nizoral. Is one more appropriate or effective for men or women?
Products for Men
Minoxidil, a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration as effective for treating hair loss, is the main ingredient for men to look for when shopping for a shampoo to help aid in hair growth. Minoxidil in shampoos comes in concentrations ranging from 2 percent to as high as 5 percent. Clinical studies suggest that higher concentrations are more effective for men. Men may prefer the 5 percent concentration to experience quicker results since the FDA has approved the higher concentrations for men. For example, Kirkland Minoxidil 5% Regrowth for Men is one of the recommended products.
Men can apply minoxidil directly to the affected areas of the scalp. The product is available for such direct application, and can also be used in this manner along with an ordinary shampoo for cleaning the hair.
The prescription alternative treatment for men is Finasteride. It is recommended by the American Hair Loss Association recommends as “the first line of attack” for adult males wanting to treat hair loss. Finasteride is offered by prescription only, but is associated with systemic side effects including loss of libido and cannot be used by women.
Products for Women
When women experience hair loss, it’s often a result of the female version of male-pattern baldness. This condition is sometimes referred to as androgenetic alopecia. It results in an abnormal amount of hair fall along the crown of the head. It is a result of the androgen DHT binding to follicles in the scalp, which causes hair loss in women as it does in men.
Generally, the treatment options are wider in selection for females than in males. Many of these options come in the form of shampoos.
Shampoo and conditioner systems containing a topical solution of minoxidil can promote hair growth in women with androgenetic alopecia. This condition responds favorably to any hair cleansing system with at least a 2 percent concentration of the medication. Based on FDA recommendations, however, women should limit their use to a product with a 2 percent concentration of minoxidil. For example, Kirkland Minoxidil 2% Regrowth for Women is recommended. The American Hair Loss Association claims that 19 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 45 experience moderate hair growth after eight months of using minoxidil.
Another approach for women is to use a shampoo containing ketoconazole, the active ingredient in Nizoral. This medication can promote hair growth in women, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Ketoconazole acts as an antiandrogenic, which means it reduces the male sex hormone of testosterone. When androgen levels are lowered, there is less DHT in the body. Lower levels of DHT can slow the progression of hair loss.
Shampoos containing ketoconazole are available over-the-counter in a 1 percent concentration. However, the 2 percent concentration is far more effective in treating hair loss, but is available only by prescription. Ketoconazole only treats women suffering from hair loss, notes the American Hair Loss Association. Men must rely on minoxidil. Ketoconazole is the working ingredient in Nizoral shampoo.
The makers of Nioxin claim that their hair more thorough hair cleansing system promotes hair growth in women. The idea behind Nioxin is that environmental factors can lead to hair loss, and that a solution lies in ridding the scalp and hair of toxins and pollutants that may be causing hair to fall out. Scientific evidence of this result is limited, however.
Kirkland minoxidil has been shown to be effective in combating hair loss in both men and women. Interestingly, it has also been shown that hair loss problems in men respond better to products with a higher concentration of minoxidil. Hair loss in women is treated more effectively with other products and formulations, such as ketoconazole or products with lower concentrations of minoxidil. Fortunately, there are Kirkland minoxidil products that are specifically formulated for both sexes.
